We are delighted to present a three day weekend tour to the Highlands of Scotland featuring not only some of the most dramatic and spectacular scenery in Britain as we journey up the highland main line to Aviemore, but also an optional off train excursion through the Cairngorm National Park to a magnificent castle, and even a whisky distillery. Accommodation for two nights is at the luxuriously appointed 4-star Macdonald Highlands Hotel set in the ski resort of Aviemore.

Saturday:

Following departure from your local station our train travels north with views of either the Lakeland mountains or Northumbrian coast before joining the Highland line which takes us through Stirling and Perth – then, over the highest railway summit in Britain at Druimuachdar and the Cairngorm National Park to Aviemore with an arrival at approx 20.00.

Sunday:

Following a hearty Scottish breakfast in the hotel the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure – with Aviemore being set in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park the resort offers boundless opportunities to experience numerous activities including perhaps a journey on the steam hauled ‘Strathspey Railway’ (payable locally) or simply a relaxing walk along the banks of the River Spey. The fresh mountain air will no doubt give you a hearty appetite and dinner is served in the award winning Aspects Restaurant.

We have arranged an optional excursion, at no additional charge, should you wish to partake but this must be pre-booked at the same time as the main tour as spaces are limited – Road coaches will leave the hotel around 10.30 for the 60 minute scenic drive through the Cairngorms to the Glen Grant Distillery where a guided tour has been arranged, followed by a stroll around the Glen Grant Victorian woodland garden – and a tasting of the ‘highland nectar’ in the heather thatched dram pavilion. We then travel to Ballindalloch Castle, located in the heart of Speyside surrounded by majestic hills the setting is truly magnificent being the home of the oldest Aberdeen Angus herd in the world. It is one of the few privately owned castles to have been lived in continuously by its original family – the Macpherson-Grants have resided here since 1546. A tour of the house and gardens are included followed by Afternoon Tea. Our return to Aviemore is in the late afternoon:

Monday:

We depart from Aviemore around 10.00 for the homeward journey over the Highland line with magnificent views of the Cairngorm Mountains before travelling through the impressive Pass of Killiecrankie and brief stops en-route for an off train break.
