The SCARBOROUGH SPA EXPRESS
What better way to enjoy the fascinating countryside of North Yorkshire and to take a trip to the historic city of York or the seaside town of Scarborough than by travelling on a vintage steam hauled train? ‘The Scarborough Spa Express’ is a great day out for all the family.
This glorious train steams out of York in the morning, picking up passengers on its circular route at Knaresborough, Harrogate and Leeds before heading back again to York and then on to Scarborough. It runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and August Bank Holiday Monday.
York is a place of contrasts - a medieval walled city with the ancient shops of the ‘Shambles’, the magnificent Minster, historic churches, intriguing museums and offering the best of modern shopping. In fact, something for everyone!
If York is the northern heritage capital of England, then Scarborough surely offers the best in British seaside entertainment. Wide sandy beaches, popular attractions, a ruined castle, a miniature railway and some fine seafront walks offer a great day out for every member fo the family.
Through the large picture windows of the vintage carriages you can enjoy beautiful views over the Yorkshire countryside. The journey’s many highlights include crossing the magnificent viaduct over the River Nidd at Knaresborough and the beautiful ruins of Kirkham Priory near Castle Howard.
The return journey, as the train heads home, into the setting sun, is always a thrill; listen to the engine working hard on the challenging climb past Yorkshire’s fabled county cricket ground at Headingley near Leeds.
